Batik is a "resist" process for making designs on fabric using wax to prevent dye from penetrating the cloth. After each stage of wax application, color is added by dipping the fabric in cold-water dye, or by brushing the dye on the stretched cloth with a different set of brushes. Each color application must dry before more wax is applied. The sequence is repeated until the final step, which involves wrinkling the waxed cloth and dipping it in a final dark dye bath. The piece is again left to dry, and then a hot iron is used to melt the wax and reveal the completed artwork.

Adinkra are visual symbols, originally created by the Akan people in Ghana (West Africa) that represents concepts or aphorisms. Adinkra are used extensively in fabrics, pottery, logos and advertising.
